The chairman of the European Parliament’s Committee on International Trade (INTA), Bernd Lange (S&D, Germany), has said he is very hopeful that the modernisation of the comprehensive agreement with Mexico, planned since 2016, would be ratified.

The two parties had reached an agreement in 2018 on the trade pillar. The EU is at the stage of procedural details. Mr Lange recalled that presidential elections are being held in 2 years in Mexico and that European elections will be held in 2024. “I really hope that we can finalise the agreement before these two important elections”, he said. He added: “The visit of our INTA delegation to Mexico has further convinced us of the need to move quickly on this agreement”.
