On Tuesday 13 September, MEPs approved (449 votes in favour, 25 against and 85 abstentions) a recommendation by Bernd Lange (S&D, German) to approve changes to the International Sugar Agreement.
This international agreement was adopted in 1992 by the United Nations Sugar Conference. Its modernisation concerns in particular the discrepancy between the number of votes and financial contributions of members on the one hand, and their position on the world sugar market on the other.

The review also allows for a revision of the objectives of the agreement. These now include: - increased international cooperation on sugar and sweetener issues worldwide; - the creation of a framework for intergovernmental consultations; - sugar trade facilitation; - encouraging demand for sugar and sugar crops.
